They say we all get our fifteen minutes of fame, but some relatives of NW Pa families got a little more than others. Here are a few Famous Folk whose relatives lived in NW Pa.

Katherine Hepburn    Katherine Houghton Hepburn was born in Hartford, Connecticut on May 12, 1907. Hepburn went on to become one of the world’s best actresses. She won four Academy Awards, and is also an Emmy Award winner and Tony Award nominee. She shared the screen with Spencer Tracy in many films.
She is related to the Spalding and Barns families of Northwestern Pa.

Clark Gable    William Clark Gable (February 1, 1901 ? November 16, 1960) was an American film actor. Though arguably best-known for his role as Rhett Butler in the 1939 epic Gone with the Wind, Gable starred in a number of well-known films, among them It Happened One Night (1934), Manhattan Melodrama (1934), and Mutiny on the Bounty (1935). He was nominated for Best Actor three times. His six starlet wives included Loretta Young and Carole Lombard.
Clark's father was Wm Clark of Crawford County and his mother was Adeline Hershelman of Meadville. His mother's family migrated to Springfield.

Dan Rice McLaren   Rice, born Daniel McLaren in New York City in 1823, joined the circus in his youth, and was renowned as a clown and humorist. He later started his own circus, but spent the winters in Girard. His image became the original Uncle Sam.
He married a Girard woman, Rebecca McConnell, and settled in the area in the 1860s.

Lucy Arnez
Legendary comedic actress, best known for the title role in the hit television sitcom of the 1950’s “I Love Lucy.” Her husband Desi and children Desi Jr and Lucy were also stars.
She is related to the Spaulding family of Northwestern Pa through Mary Witter.
