EARLY HISTORY OF THE STEWARD/Rogers FAMILY
(Read by Bertha Joslin at the reunion, Christmas, 1897)
Lemuel Steward was married to Rebecca Rose not far from 1780. Their home was in Grafton, Rensselaer County, State of NY. Of this union there were eight children as follows:
Lemuel Steward married Betsy Rouse
Josiah Steward married Hannah Sweet
Rebecca Steward married Nathaniel Church
Sarah Steward married Nathan Rogers **
Deborah Steward married Francis Brock
Eiphalet Steward married a Miss Tilly
Lemuel and Josiah Steward, Nathan Rogers, Francis Brock and Samuel Main and their families emigrated to Elk Creek Township, Erie County, Pennsylvania between the years of 1817 and 1824. (Josiah Steward and Samuel Main came about 1817. Lemuel Steward came in 1823. Nathan Rogers and Francis Brock came in 1824.) Their journey was not a pleasure trip in a cushioned palace car...but was made in a long covered lumber wagon drawn by two yoke of stout oxen over rough roads and through gloomy forests, taking about five weeks to complete a journey of five hundred miles.
Those five families bought and occupied farms adjoining. They felled the giants of the forest, built log cabins, logged and made logging bees. They worked with stout heart and willing hands, so where once waved the limbs of giant trees in the winter winds, and grotesque shadows played in the long winter evenings, we now see broad meadows, rolling pastures, fruit orchards and comely frame buildings. And while our fathers were at work the mothers were not idle. It seems as if we can almost hear today the hum of the spinning wheel, the click of the shuttle, the snip of the shears, as they carded the wool, spun, wove and made their clothing. In summer, straw hats and bare feet were the order of the day.
